JSW Automates 10,000+ Monthly Invoices on a Legacy SAP System

Industry - Steel and Manufacturing

Region - India

JSW Steel is an Indian multinational steel company headquartered in Mumbai, with plants in Karnataka, Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu and Odisha and roughly 28,000 employees. Its accounts payable team receives 10,000+ invoices a month across three business entities, in material, freight and combined types, all feeding into SAP ECC 6. With volume at that level, the company implemented Neil, an AI-powered co-worker built for accounts payable.

The Challenge

Entry, PO-GRN-invoice validation and approval routing were done entirely by hand. Material, freight and combined invoices each followed different rules, and AP workflows were not standardized across entities and vendors. SAP ECC 6 had no readily available APIs, so real-time data validation was difficult. Delays meant late payments, vendor dissatisfaction and compliance risk, with very little visibility into what was happening in AP.

The Solution

Neil, built on E42’s Cognitive Process Automation platform, takes each invoice from capture to approval. Self-learning AI models extract and validate the data, an automated three-way check matches purchase orders, goods receipts and invoices, and duplicates are caught even after posting. Invoices route for approval by business rules, and Power BI dashboards show status, exceptions and pending approvals in real time. Through a custom integration, Neil talks to SAP ECC 6 in both directions, even though SAP offers no native APIs.
